Two ceremonies on the North Oregon Coast
They started on the cliffs. Before the guests, before the church, before any of it, they drove down to Oswald West State Park and walked out to the overlooks above Devil’s Cauldron and Elk Flats to read the vows they’d written for each other. No chairs, no program, nobody watching but the two of them and us, wind coming straight off the water. It was still morning.
By early afternoon they were at St. Mary by the Sea Catholic Church, in Rockaway Beach, a few hundred feet off the sand, doing it again in front of everyone they love. It’s a small room and it fills fast, and with the doors open you can hear the Pacific underneath everything, the readings, the vows, the part where somebody’s kid says something out loud. There’s a particular steadiness to two people who already said the hard part alone that morning. You can see it on them walking in.
That order is the whole film, and it’s the reason we cut it the way we did. The cliff is where they said what it actually meant. The church is where they promised it out loud, in front of every person who’d get them there.
